FAQ - Grooming

Our FAQ pages provide a list of questions that are frequently posted on our message board.  The answer is a summary of the best advice given in response to the question by our members.

It is recommended that you consult a variety of experts and resources in order to make an informed decision regarding the care of your conure.

How long should my conure's nails be?  How do I trim them?

Your best bet is to ask your avian vet to show you how to trim your conure's nails.  The nails should not be so long that they curl back on themselves.

Most conures will try to keep their nails from becoming too long by chewing them and rubbing them against a rough surface.  You can also try putting one rough perch (sandy perch or concrete perch) in his cage in front of his food bowl, where it will get a lot of use.  Do not replace all of his perches with rough perches, however, as they can be irritating to his feet if used exclusively.
